Business glossary
Trailing invoice
An invoice issued after a main billing event for charges identified or finalized later.
Example
After a project's main invoice, an agreed courier charge may be finalized later. A separate trailing invoice can reference the original project and explain the additional amount without duplicating previously billed work.
How it differs from related terms
A trailing invoice describes later billing, not a universal statutory invoice category. It differs from a credit note, which reduces a charge. Check that the additional item is supported by the agreement and has not already been paid.
